‘She’ — An Interview With The Indigos

Melbournian duo The Indigos have just shared their fiery, dynamic single ‘She’ — written for anyone who has been through the hurricane of an all-consuming love. We caught up with Kieran & Arthur ahead of the release to talk creative process and can-do attitudes.

Can you tell us a little bit about what inspired this latest release ‘She’?

Kieran: The bass riff was stuck in my head for days and days, so I recorded it in my bedroom and just looped it over and over and I kind of jammed to the loop on guitar. I had a huge Nirvana phase when I was in high school and I thought it had that same angsty vibe that a lot of their tunes have so I wrote the lyrics to go along with that. The idea of the song is it’s about a whirlwind of a relationship with a woman that ends up consuming you and you know something that good can’t be good in the long run. You know ‘she must be some kind of dream’ but can’t figure out if she’s a nightmare or not.

What does the writing/recording process look like between the two of you?

Arthur: So far all the tunes have been written by Kieran and I. The writing process varies from song to song but typically one of us will write the bulk of the tune and the other will help with the finishing touches. Our recording process is very DIY, almost everything has been recorded in either Kieran’s garage or my bedroom. This is made a lot easier with help from our very talented producer/secret 5th band member, Will Klep.

Any big plans for 2021?

Kieran: We would really love to record an EP by the end of the year but right now our sights are set on gigging as much as we can and really getting the band going. We’ve done a lot of sitting alone in our bedrooms recording so we really want to get this music out to people and play it live together. We have our first gig to kick off the release of ‘She’ on the 10th of March at The Old Bar.

best advice you’d pass out to aspiring musicians?

Arthur: We are still very much aspiring musicians ourselves, if we ever figure it all out we’ll let you know! But, I would say that one thing I’ve learnt is that doing the back end stuff (sending out emails, maintaining socials) is just as important as the music itself.

and last but definitely not least — what would you like listeners to take away from your music?

Kieran: We’re really proud of how DIY everything we do is and I think that’s a message I’d really love fellow musicians and anyone else to know is just how much you can get done through sheer determination. If you want to express yourself or make your voice heard, for a lot people, there are a lot of ways you can do it and you just need to make those first steps. I never dreamt that I’d be releasing music as a singer/songwriter but it only took that first step of asking for Arthur’s help to get this thing going and we’ve achieved a lot of the goals we set out at the start. You just have to make that first step.
