Artist Profile; Jedd Downes

My Artworks themselves, are depictions of themselves, existing as what they are.

Working in hyper abstraction, leaves my work with its own authenticity, my authenticity. I’m searching for the missed things in painting, the over looked, the forgotten. I don’t believe everything has been done before, otherwise society and artists would have all the answers. I get lost in my artworks sometimes, they can take hours upon weeks to complete, I primarily work in the exploitation of three dimensional space, I do this through exploiting paint for its strength, depth, volume.

Paint how i feel,

want you to see what i feel.

it’s not certain,

overwhelming,

anxiety,

trying,

existing.

hidden in my coat is painting,

passing,

a walk in the park with my painting,

finding,

there’s an error in my paint,

only to be,

stuck in another painting,

you wouldn’t believe it,

i woke up in another painting.

Capturing moments.

past, present and future,

A time traveller

on a journey

searching

the human condition

painting a regular life,

where the wild paintings grow.

My practice envolves, enaging with space and watching paint dry

i’m a mutidisciplinary painter, practicing in the studio and on the streets,

my passion for painting stems from graffiti.

i furthered my knowledge and love of the arts through study over the years.

obtaining my cert 3 - 4 in fine arts at West Wollongong tafe 2010,

and my bachelor of visual art from Wollongong University in 2016.

In 2018, i had two solo exhibitions,

My first solo show in May was, Quantum painter: reflections in paint, at the now closed Chokey run by local artists, Will Hillzinger and Vince Barwick,

followed up by Stratum at the art passage in Crockers Miranda, run by Helensburgh artist Korynn Morrison.

while working on works for solo shows in the down time i’ve been curating group exhibitions in Wollongong,

with such exhibitions as the bottleshop, held at the now closed Pretty Good Gallery, run by local Wollongong artist Nicci Bedson.

This exhibiton was focused around the artists relationship with the support of alcohol.

The Day In Day Out exhibitons held at Verb Syndicate, where i curate and manage the gallery side of the business, are another little project of mine.

The goal of these group exhibitions is to open up networking, for the local arts community in the area, and south coast, while keeping people practicing.

The theme of the exhibitions change monthly, and i am always on the hunt for new emerging artists that may want to have a go at exhibiting, as a part of the group shows or to have a solo exhibiton, if they have a body of work.

Currently i am working with Local Artist Tyler Bruce on his solo show that will be opening June 27th at Verb Syndicate.

Being half way through 2019 i’m planning on having another exhibition this year.

i should have a body of work together by September 17th.

Also keep your eyes peeled for information about the treasure hunt group exhibition.
