In Development

Shelby Sumskis

My love for film started when I decided to pick up these two cameras I’d received from an old family member, which had purely been a decorative, hipster addition to my room. Not knowing how to use them or whether they even worked (one being a Kodak Retina Ib from 1954, how could it still work?), I threw some film in from a common retail store and the journey began. I could not contain my excitement in waiting for these first photos to get developed. Although grainy and overexposed, I absolutely loved them. And so it began.

Over only a year of shooting, I have learnt so much through people that I’ve shot with, and those that have developed my film for me. It’s incredible how creative and knowledgeable this community is. I learn more and more every time I shoot, and will keep developing (hopefully in more ways than one). Although it’s a situation of the old becoming trendy again, it means so much more. Shooting film gives you emotions that you can’t experience with the digital. The anticipation of waiting for the roll to be developed, the delayed gratification, the excitement when you finally receive your photos, and the disappointment often accompanying some mistakes which can’t be fixed. It progresses you to keep going, keep shooting, and keep capturing things that no one else has before.

So here are some random memories and scenes from Melbourne, Australia and New Zealand captured by my Canon AE-1 Program, my #1, shot on Fujicolour C200. Hope you enjoy.
