Interview; Tim Ayre

[ interview by Michael Rowles ]

‘Nothing’ is the latest single from Sydney-local Tim Ayre; another dreamy soundscape off his debut EP which will greet the world later this year. We’re digging this new tune around the office & cannot wait to see what 2019 has in store for Tim (hint; a tour)!

First of all, I am absolutely loving the jazzy/electro/synth sound. I think it is truly unique and you can’t help but grooving out to it! Just a few questions about your work.

Thanks heaps! Appreciate it :)

Coming from part of ‘Tim and Jean’, now a solo artist. What differences have you found between working as a duo compared to now?

It’s a little harder to make decisions on your own for sure but collaborating and working with people is what I love about music, I will always be making music with people.

Nowadays, many artists will rely on social media for their main form of advertisement. Has social media benefited you or do you find it in some way limiting?

It’s definitely crazy.. but I still love it.

You took an extended break between the two music projects, did you do anything else creative during this time? How did you stay innovative throughout this period?

Yeah I felt I needed to regain the love to create and the want to release music again but yeah in that time I did collaborate in writing for other artists and put on gigs etc.. it was fun but I’m fully back involved in my own music now.

Your inspirations are all legends of their respective decades, if you could ask one of them one question? Who would it be and what would you ask them?

Ooooh this is a tough question.. It would probably be Daft Punk and I would ask how they got the bass sound in Voyager. I’ve heard it was on a Korg ms-20 but I don’t know for sure.
