Mount Arethusa
Nathan McAndrew
Located deep in the Kananaskis country of Alberta, Canada. The route starts on a road, just off Highway 40 about 1.3km south of the Highwood Pass. From there the trail is marked by a small pile of rocks and a yellow sign advising hunters that weapons must be carried unloaded.
Despite it only being 9553 ft high, Mount Arethusa has a moderate approach with a great ridge hike through to a descend route that’s a huge scree run right back to the bottom. With any good scree run, you feel like you’re skiing down the mountain top.
My good friend Adam texted me around 4pm and asked if I wanted to reach the summit on sunset. “Sounds fantastic, let’s do it. See you in 15” I said. I pulled some gear together, grabbed my camera and headed out. I met another friend, Mike and the 3 of us headed South from Canmore, Alberta to the Kananaskis region.
Keen to add another peak to my list and to shoot some rolls, I was excited and ready to push and to be at the summit in time for the last light on the day.
Upon reaching the top, Adam entered our summit into the index. We danced around the top and I took the photographs you see below to remember the day.
