SoCal Madness
Exhibition at Tricks of the Trade Gallery in Prahran, Friday the 12th of October 2018.
What can we expect from the SoCal Madness event?
The SoCal Madness project is really about culture and exploring that through different mediums but predominantly through photography. The event is a full experience that communicates the culture of skate/youth culture within California with super 8 projections, neon lights, prints, coffee table books, live music and more! Apart from that you can expect loads of free beer (that’s the real selling point right?)
We’ve heard that you spent a bit of time in Southern California earlier this year. Why did you head there?
The start of the year I made a promise to myself I would challenge myself and out myself in positions that would inspire me even if it didn’t work out with the scheduling of life. Dogtown, Craig Stecyk and the z boys were all big inspirations for my work, so I wanted to go to the birthplace and try and immerse myself in as much of it as I could! What was made there is what’s being shown at the exhibition.
How have these travels inspired your work?
Seeing a lifestyle and culture that we don’t have access to ourselves here in Australia! Sure the arts, skating and surfing culture is getting better in Australia but we don’t have merely as much of the history that places like Southern California have. So getting access to certain locations and experiences that I couldn’t have gotten in aus has really helped shape my work.
Most memorable moment from your career thus far - hit us.
That’s a fucking good question, there’s many! I think sitting in the boot of a car while filming a swimwear campaign through the rice fields in Indonesia earlier this year for sure!
What’s next for Cal Foster?
I’ve been stewing on a few ideas for a while for a short film. Once the show is over I think I’m going to start writing the script and start that adventure. The SoCal Madness event hasn’t even launched yet through, and the shop will be open for a week after opening night so I suppose I’ll wrap my head completely around what’s next then!
