songs to break apart to
Holly Blackmore (Lazuli)
A compilation of songs that have defined my past month as I moved North again, coming to terms with new shores and secrets shared.
Blondie - Current Joys
Parked on top of the hill — it’s 9 p.m. & he has brought you here, to overlook the city lights. Your teeth are cold from the ice-cream. You both face forward, over the skyline, speaking in whispers and veiled disclosures, too afraid to hold eye contact. You didn’t think he would like this sort of music, but he does. Can we kiss? Can we dance? And so when you notice his body shift, opening up towards you in the driver’s seat, you sink a little lower. Breathe a little deeper.
Thinking About You - Frankie and the Witch Fingers
Driving home alone, basking in the happy-sad pain that inevitably comes with feeling. You might never even tell these people how you feel, but you will sing the words to this song & keep your foot on the accelerator longer than you need to, twisting & turning along the highway at reckless speeds.
Ugly Dress - Jesse Woods
Unsure what to do & who to call, so you put this song on repeat. Sitting alone on your bed, it’s early afternoon & no one else is home. The house has that empty feel, that perceptible sense of energetic silence. You haven’t been out of your room in hours, but you know there is nobody waiting out there for you. The words form erratic loops in your head; at least she takes a chance, I know ‘cause I’ve counted all her tattoos.
I Am The Changer — Cotton Jones
It’s late at night, and you’re tired. Too tired to fall asleep, even. Everything has turned around. And there is nothing to do but lie there under moonlight coming in through open blinds, staring at the wooden struts of the ceiling. A thousand miles away from your family & the streets that raised you. Everything has turned around.
Blue Hour - Babe Rainbow
And then, once all hope is lost & there are no more tears to be cried — queue this track. Driving to the beach in the early morning, surfboards thrust over the back-seat because we can’t afford roof racks. The sun is only just beginning to squeeze through the trees and the water is glassy — so glassy that you might slip & slide toward new beginnings.
