JVLY - ghostbones

‘ghostbones’ comes as the closing track on Newcastle-based artist JVLY’s debut album inside weather. ‘ghostbones’ is a pulsing, glitchy lo-fi masterpiece. The track is atmospheric, creating a sense of floating especially with lyrics “you’re like water through hands”. There are potentially some Flume influences whirling in the background of the second verse, they’re well suited to the production which is breathy and refreshing

POPPONGENE - Don’t Even Know

The track doesn’t want you to ease in, it smacks you in the face at second one with a combination of punchy bass and drums and keeps you captivated for the full three minutes and nine seconds. The track drops into a chord progression reminiscent of Methyl Ethyl, assisted with an intertwining bass line and unapologetic vocals that sit gloriously between those plucky notes.

Sophisticated Dingo - What Is Going On?

Sophisticated Dingo are like the musical incarnation of wearing Doc Martins under a ball gown. ‘What Is Going On’ is a high energy head bang of a track, produced by the Melbourne-based duo who are no stranger to creating music that gets you up and going. While the energy is high, the lyrics are existential and longing aided by twangy vocals and appropriate wahs and oohs in the background.

E^st - I WANNA BE HERE

‘I WANNA BE HERE’ reminds me of the uneasy feeling in the uber home from the club, finally alone, staring out the window longingly – it helps that this is the scene painted vibrantly by E^st in the first verse. The piano which floats through the entire track is warm and hints at the overall positivity of the track. In classic E^st style, ‘I WANNA BE HERE’ drops into an absolute pop banger that you can cathartically cry in the club to or jump around your room to, singing every lyric.

E4444E - Solar

‘Solar’ kicks off as a bubbling combination of longing lyrics and acoustic guitar. It sounds as if e4444e is strumming the guitar with so much passion and it emanates through the production. That passion is only amplified by the introduction of the organ-like synths which slot in so perfectly amongst the effervescent instrumental. ‘Solar’ is one of ten tracks off the Newcastle-based artists’ debut album Coldstream Road which dropped June 12. If you’re in the mood for an atmospheric, emotional journey then go and give the whole album a listen.

Sunbather - Bad Timing

Bad Timing comes in at track number three on the Brisbane-based duo’s debut EP ‘Brown Bread’. Known for their dreamy indie-pop sound, nothing is held back in this track. A warm glittery guitar opens the instrumental paving the way for the perfect low-key drums and mellow bass line. The vocals are ambient and whimsical, glittering like sun on the water, perfectly suited to the instrumental. With such a strong debut EP, it gets us so excited to see what the future holds for ‘Sunbather’.

Great Gable - I Wonder

Hailing from Perth, the indie-rock quartet have dropped another low-key psychedelic bop in the form of ‘I Wonder’. The track is colourful, twangy and intelligently layered from every tap to every guitar note. The bass that sits underneath the verses acts as a perfect tone-setter especially when it works its way down with lyrics such as “I wonder if she cares about me / I wonder if she cares that I’m freaky”. This track is setting the perfect tone for the band’s upcoming debut album which drops on August 7.

Bananagun - Bang Goes The Bongos

Bananagun are by far one of my favourite up and coming bands at the moment and their debut album is the reason why. In particular this track – ‘Bang Goes The Bongos’. The track begins as quirky as ever with bongos and monkey sounds? The song breaks into high energy funkiness adorned with tambourines and vibrant guitars. The energy and twanginess vibrates throughout the track landing in the palm of your hand as a silky smooth gem for your ears.

Noah Dillon - Sunburnt In July

Noah Dillon is the guy who bravely sang that he’d be “more like Matthew McConaughey” and his newest drop ‘Sunburnt In July’ is just as honest and heartfelt as the last. The track is emotional and cathartic and emanates so much passion. Whether it’s the thrashing drums or the punchy guitar, it just makes you feel things. There is something very Hockey Dad about this track, maybe it’s the personality but it sure is another bangin one from Noah Dillon.

Sunbeam Sound Machine - Worry Wart

‘Worry Wart’ is Sunbeam Sound Machine’s first drop of the year and it's an oozy beachy daydream. The track has some lo-fi/bedroom pop vibes but is so much more layered than that. The vocals are silky and ambient blending in with the basic strum of the guitar and distant drumming perfectly. If floating through the air had a soundtrack, this would be the first song. The mere dreaminess of this track (especially the oohs and ahs) has got me with goosebumps on my arms and a very full heart.
