5 Reasons To <3 Phantastic Ferniture
Holly Blackmore
1. Phantastic Ferniture is fronted by our favourite home-grown singer/songwriter, Julia Jacklin, who stole hearts in 2016 with her debut album ‘Don’t Let The Kids Win’. She comes together with old friends Elizabeth Hughes, Ryan K Brennan and Tom Stephens on this indie-psych-folk project.
2. The band was formed after a late-night, drunken discussion at a pizza joint in Sydney. Word has it that ten friends made the pact, but only four remembered it the next morning. The plan was for it to be a “Christmas band” with an annual performance. But it became so much more.
3. Their first gig was somewhat of a hot mess. The group managed to secure a comedian and a choir group to support them on the day, and finalised their songs in the carpark outside Record Crate minutes before their set.
4. The original film-clip for ‘Fuckin ’n’ Rollin’ was a DIY job, with the crew jumping on an old mattress in Blackwattle Bay, Glebe for the song’s length. The track was being played through an iPhone, amplified by a paper bag. They’ve since produced another visual for the track, linked above. It’s a gem.
5. To release their self-titled album in 2018, the group created their own record label. Make Out Records is yet another reflection of the group’s spontaneity, momentum and why-the-hell-not attitude. It just feels right.
