A Snapshot With George Alice

{interview by Emily-Layne Kapetanovic}

It’s not often that a fifteen-year-old hits number one on Australia’s Viral Charts but for George Alice that’s not even all of it. Alice dropped her debut track ‘Circles’ last year and took out Triple J’s Unearthed High competition and that’s where it all began. The pop princess has been performing her emotionally driven and vibrant pop tracks to audiences across the country at festivals like Laneway Festival and Rolling Sets, and has supported the likes of Vera Blue, Tash Sultana and Broods.

Her second track has been a long time coming, dropping almost a year after ‘Circles’ but it was well worth the wait. ‘Stuck In A Bubble’ landed on June 10 and was produced by Nasaya; an artist known for his smooth infusion of jazz, pop, electronic and classic rock. The track is silky and effervescent, with the perfect amount of dreamy and bright tones. With two tracks under her belt as well as a lifetime’s worth of wisdom, George Alice shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

You dropped Circles almost exactly a year ago for Unearthed High, how do you think you’ve changed as an artist since Circles to now with Stuck In A Bubble?

I think overall I’ve just grown up and really grown into who I am as an artist. The song Stuck In A Bubble itself feels like a mature step forward from Circles which I’m really happy about. Most importantly I’m definitely more confident in who I am as an artist and my abilities.

The music video for Stuck In A Bubble is reflective of the situation we’re all living in right now, what was the concept behind it? Was the idea conceived while in isolation or was it something that had to change and adapt with the circumstances?

The music video was definitely a unique experience, we planned the whole video through zoom calls and FaceTimes in isolation and it happened to work really well. We tried to make something bright and fun to bring light to the current situation, bringing friends and the team together to make something really special!

Originally the video was in talks of going a very different direction but we soon adapted and we’re super proud of the video now.

What does the future hold of George Alice and what sort of things have you learnt since winning Unearthed High that you will take with you into the rest of your career?

I have definitely learnt to take my time, to take each step cautiously and focus on who I want to be. As a 16 year old fresh into the industry it’s obvious to say I wasn’t 100% prepared for what was about to happen or had half as much knowledge as I do now so I’m just continuing to grow in that way for a while. Feeling things out whilst making new music and diving into the world of production.
