How Ninajirachi Found Her Voice In New EP, Blumiere

{interview by Emily-Layne Kapetanovic}

Ninajirachi is a musician and producer based just out of Sydney in the NSW Central Coast. As an electronic artist, she has become synonymous with ethereal and luminous pop tracks that usually drop into a growling and glitchy banger that is perfect to get sweaty in the clubs to.

Kicking goals from the start, Ninajirachi’s breakout track ‘Pure Luck (feat. Freya Staer)’ landed her a spot in the Spotify Australia Viral Charts as well as high rotation Triple J radio play. She was also a finalist in Triple J’s Unearthed High Competition two years in a row. But that was all while she was in high school.

Now 20 years old, Ninajirachi truly is one of the most exciting up and coming artists in the country. Not only has she played Groovin The Moo, This That Festival, FOMO and Falls Festival to name a few but she’s also released two EPs and a handful of stand-alone tracks.

It seemed almost impossible that Nina could get any better and then she dropped her second EP Blumiere on June 5. Featuring five glimmering tracks, this EP marks the first time Nina has used her own voice in her music and boy has it got everyone asking for more.

How have you been while in lockdown?

I’ve been up and down but mostly relaxed. I’m lucky that being a producer means I can work from home very easily, and it’s been nice to spend a lot of time with my family.

Your EP Blumiere dropped on the 5th, how does it feel to have this one out in the world?

So good! It was nice to create and release music over a relatively short span of time. By the time I’d released my first EP in 2019, some of the songs had been around for a long time and I’d sat on the finished product for almost a year. With Blumiere the process was much quicker and I love working that way.

What was the creative process behind the EP? Were there any notable inspirations?

It’s really just a bunch of songs that I’ve worked on over the last six months that I thought were good and release-worthy. I was definitely inspired by Dog Blood’s latest EP when I was working on some of the more club friendly tracks, and ‘Alight’ was inspired by a little crush I had on a guy in December last year.

You dropped three of the tracks early, how did you decide which songs you wanted to release prior to the entire EP?

I released ‘Cut The Rope’ first because it felt like a nice way to intro the idea that I’m using my own vocals while linking back to my prior release which was more of an instrumental club track. Having the title track also be a single just felt right, and I guess I just wanted to save the more pop-leaning ones for when the whole EP came out.

Blumiere also marks the first time you’ve featured your own voice on your tracks. Does using your own voice make the music you release more personal?

Yeah definitely, it’s the one instrument in my music that no other producer has access to, so it feels more distinctly me. I’ve also found it hard to direct a vocalist performing something that I’ve written and have it sound exactly the way I want it to, and singing it myself has sorta solved that problem.

You’re kind of the queen of collaborations with Coucheron, Oh boy and Freya Staer among the mix. Do you have any more collaborations planned for future music?

Haha thanks! Definitely, the next bit of music I’m going to release is a collaboration with an artist who I love and I’m really excited about it.

What does the future hold for Ninajirachi?

More music! I’ve got sooooo much music ready to go and I can’t wait to release it. Also, hopefully more shows when I can go back to touring.
