Moments In Between

Alice Halden

This work revealed itself at every stage very organically, it was my challenge to refrain from overthinking and just facilitate its birth. First I had to learn to be in front of the camera, doing this for the first time was confronting and I found the best images to be the ones where I am not conscious or performative; the moments in between.

Selecting only five images from over 4000 was the most difficult, again, as I kept pushing, the images found their own relationship to one another. It was a very instinctual process serving my concept which encompasses a number of broader ideas that I have tried to examine through female self-portraiture and the gaze. Looking at the role of females in the art world, the woman as artist and subject and also the power exchange of the gaze and its subversion in female self-portraiture. The process itself allowed me to explore my own confidence with my body and the liberation found in its revealing. It was important for me to take full control of the creative process, trust my instincts, have faith in my concept and build upon it through the production of the work itself. My portraits have revealed many things to me, hopefully you can find your own strength within them.

Special thanks to Teo, Jacky and Tom, without whom, this work would not have been realised.
