New Moon Rituals ●

The new moon represents the start of a new lunar cycle, and as such carries the energy of new beginnings. These are just some ideas around how you might celebrate this monthly occurrence. I’ve personally found that honouring the moon’s phases and taking time out on new/full moon nights to reflect has made me feel so much more aligned with the natural world.

Ritual Ideas

Ocean swim

The ocean is a perfect place to reset your body and mind. There’s something so humbling about splashing about in the water under the dark night sky of a new moon. Imagine the water cleansing you of whatever has held you back in the month beforehand. You might like to say a prayer/blessing before entering the water, or scrub your skin with sand. If you don’t have access to the ocean, you can definitely have a similar experience in the shower. I enjoy using the new moon as an evening to shave, exfoliate, mask and all of the other little things that make me feel most refreshed.

In the days around the new moon, it’s cathartic to physically tidy your room. Wiping down dust, re-arranging books and photo frames, creating a vision board for the month. As well as this, you might want to burn sage or palo santo to clear any negative energies that have accumulated.

MEDITATE

There are a tonne of free meditations on YouTube, Insight Timer or pretty much any other meditation platform. Don’t feel as though you have to listen to one that relates directly to the new moon — in my experience, it’s more important to pick whichever track resonates with you most as you’re browsing. I like to have minimal lighting (maybe just a candle) and lie flat on the floor on my back, palms facing up.

Straight out of meditation, grab your journal and start writing. Use the first few minutes to just spill whatever thoughts come to your head, releasing everything that is ready to be acknowledged. Then, perhaps you might want to write out a gratitude list. Don’t judge yourself on what comes out — you can be thankful for anything, even something as small as the way sun-light streams in through your window each morning. After this, it’s time to set your intentions for the new lunar month. I like to outline three new goals, and jot down some actionable steps to reach them.

draw cards

For those of you who have a tarot/oracle deck, feel free to draw some cards in relation to any questions you might have. I’m not the most experienced here, so I’ll either just do a basic past-present-future layout, or just pull out one card with a specific question in mind. I’ve heard it’s best to shuffle the deck eight times as you sit with your intention.

This is something that I personally swear by — it leaves me feeling grounded, inspired and often triggers pent-up emotions that are stuck below the surface. Inserting a CD, or putting on a record, is a totally different experience to just hitting play on Spotify. By listening to the entirety of an album, you become invested in the arc of it, the moments of intensity and the moments of heart-break. It’s nice to leave this playing in the background as you go about your other rituals. Or sometimes, I just lie down and listen — nothing pressing to do, no place else to be, just stillness. It’s moments like these which allow the truth of everything to be channeled through you.

Who/what do you wish to attract into your life? — why do you want these things (i.e. are they coming from a place of fullness or lack)?

If you sense a need for control, dependency or completion, perhaps brainstorm some ways in which you find fullness in yourself.

An ‘attitude of gratitude’ is essential for sustaining a higher frequency existence. No matter how bad you perceived your past month to be, list ten things you are thankful for.
